The Rogue River is the best overnight rafting run in Oregon and it is extremely popular due to it's relative proximity to Portland, Oregon as well as Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area in California.
Where is it?
The Rogue flows through the town of Grants Pass and the part that is most often rafted starts about 30 minutes from Grants Pass near the town of Merlin. Many people combine a rafting trip on the Rogue River with a trip to Ashland's famous Ashland Shakespeare Festival or with a trip up the scenic Oregon Coast. Crater Lake National Park is another great place to visit nearby.
What are the rapids like?
The Rogue is a Class III river which makes it perfect for first timers and people that want a relaxing trip. The Rogue is a pool/drop style river which means that there are calm sections of river in between the rapids. There is one class IV rapid towards the end of the trip that should be scouted to ensure a good run. An inflatable kayak or "duckie" is a great way to make the rapids more exciting for those looking for more of a thrill.
Why the Rogue?
In a few words: wildlife, great camps, and solitude. In the canyon you'll be able to leave the regular world behind and have a good chance to see bald eagles, osprey, bears (rarely a problem), river otter, and many other animals. The Rogue is an easy trip to put together as the logistics are easy and there are many other attractions nearby.
